On Tuesday (August 5), a sudden flash flood caused by a cloudburst in the Kheer Ganga river catchment area swept away houses, shops and roads, leaving a trail of destruction. Two cloudburst incidents were reported, one in Dharali and another in the Sukhi Top area, resulting in widespread destruction. Dharali bore the brunt of the damage. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand, particularly in the hill districts.

A joint team of 201 personnel from the Army, ITBP, Police, Revenue, BRO, and ambulance services are at the site. Additionally, a second wave of 211 responders from SDRF, NDRF, BRO, Fire Services, PWD, and other departments was deployed. The Emergency Operations Centre remains active, with senior administrative officers overseeing efforts.  Helipad operations at Jhala have been activated to support aerial rescue, while alerts have been issued to residents near riverbanks in Bhattwadi, Gangori, and Uttarkashi. Several colleges have been turned into relief shelters and camps.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami over the phone Wednesday and inquired about the relief and rescue operations at the disaster site in the Dharali area of ​​Uttarakhand district

“The state government is engaged in relief and rescue operations with full readiness,” Uttarakhand CM said to PM Modi. “Due to continuous heavy rains, there are difficulties in some areas, but all the concerned agencies are working in coordination so that the affected people can get quick assistance,” he added.

The PM also assured all possible assistance from the central government.

A joint team comprising 201 personnel has reached the incident site at Dharali Khiragad with equipment and is carrying out rescue operations. This includes:

  • ITBP (Kopang): 46 personnel
  • Police: 20 personnel
  • Revenue Department: 4 personnel
  • Harsil/Dharali 108 Ambulance: 2 units
  • BRO (Border Roads Organisation): 8 personnel

Additionally, under the supervision of the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bhattwadi, and Tehsildar Bhattwadi, a second joint team of 211 personnel with equipment has been dispatched to the incident site. This includes:
